If you are planning to buy a new iPad and never had one before, then below question is relevant.

Do you really need an iPad?

Owning an iPad definitely have some benefits apart from increasing your prestige. iPad is worth if you are a intended user for it. iPad Air was released on November 2013 and iPad Air 2 on October 2014. The successor 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 9.7-inch iPad Pro were released on September 2015.  iPad Air 3 is rumored to release soon however there is no official announcement yet.

iPad Air vs iPad Mini vs iPad Pro

I personally don't recommend iPad Mini because of its smaller screen. If you can invest little more iPad Air or iPad Air 2 is a better option. iPad Pro has double RAM(4GB) compared to iPad Air 2 and a better processor. Almost all apps in Appstore works smoothly in iPad Air 2 and hence the extra RAM and better processor is meant only for future proof. The force touch feature and the Apple pencil support is a bonus only if you are an artist or affluent enough. Apple pencil can shed another $99 from your pocket.

iPad Air 2

Apple device or IOS has its limitations compared to Android. Unlike Android you will not be able to find app for any or everything in iTunes. There is no proper file manager in IOS and hence you can't move any files in and out like in PC. With simple UI and snappy performance iPad Air 2 offers much in media consumption. Never go for the 16GB or 32GB version as the limited storage will make you regret soon. iPad Air 2 is not pricey compare to iPad Pro and not going to be obsolete soon like iPad Air. iPad Air 2 64gb is available for $489 in Amazon.com and about 34k in Amazon.in. Few, but there are notable reasons to prefer iPad Air 2 over iPad Air.
iPad Air 2 has:
Double RAM(2GB) and better processor(64-bit A8X and M8) - This is the main reason why you should prefer iPad Air 2 over iPad Air. iPad Air 2 shows an appreciable performance over iPad Air.
Better Camera(8MP) - Nobody uses iPad camera and you will understand this soon after buying.
Touch ID - Life become easier with touch ID, atleast for me.
Split Screen Multitasking and Picture-in-Picture feature -
Though I seldom use this, it is worth mentioning and iPad Air do not offer these functionalities.

Now the answer to question. Is iPad Air or iPad Air 2 worth buying in 2017? The answer is a clear 'Yes' for iPad Air 2. iPad Air on the other hand can become obsolete in one or two years. New, power hungry apps can sometimes struggle in iPad Air in future. iPad Air 2 is the best recommended iPad to buy in 2017 considering budget and performance.
